Trekking and Hiking Adventure

Did you know that Colombia is home to approximately 59 national parks? It’s one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.

Nationally protected areas cover about 169,545 square kilometers of land. That represents more than 14% of the country’s area! It includes deserts, tropical rainforests, coral reefs, mountain ranges, and other indigenous and sacred lands.

All are untouched by heavy industrial activity, making it among the best places to explore. What better way to do that than by trekking and hiking?

Below are our top two places to trek and hike in Colombia:

  1. Lost City, Ciudad Perdida

    It takes three to four trek-days through the jungles of Sierra Nevada in Santa Marta to reach this magical place. The journey is long and arduous. You’ll have to climb hills, cut through vegetation, cross rivers, and, finally, climb approximately 1,200 stone steps.

    When you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking scenery that’s beautiful from every angle.

    If you’re afraid of getting lost, some guides offer chaperone services. They’ll be with you throughout the journey. Their fee for the whole three to four-day trek tour will cost you between 200 to 300 USD, and that includes transportation from and to your hotel, all meals throughout the trek (as well as snacks and water), travel guides, insurance, and park entrance fee.

    The price isn’t bad, considering it includes almost everything you could need during the trek.

  2. Tayrona National Park

    The place is also located in Sierra Nevada, Santa Marta, exactly at the foothills (below the Lost City).

    It’s spread over a large stretch of the Caribbean coastline with a vast rainforest behind it. You’ll find hundreds of species of mammals and a variety of colorful birds native to Colombia.

    The place is perfect for couples who love hiking and spending time at the beach afterward.

    The park’s entry fee will cost you 14 USD (for foreign tourists) and 5 USD (for Colombian nationals).

    Once inside the park, you’ll have two options for the journey to the beach: You can either opt to hike there or take a van from the entrance to the beachfront. The van ride will only cost you 1 USD.

One of the most fun outdoor activities for couples to do together is going to the many breathtaking beaches in the country. Colombia has two coastlines filled with incredible white sand beaches, great for water activities like snorkeling, parasailing, and deep diving.

Most women love a nice and relaxing time on the beach, even Latinas. Why not take your girl on a beach getaway within the country?

To give you a few options, below is a small list of wonderful islands to visit:

  1. Playa Blanca - Located on the stunning island of Isla Baru is a long and narrow white-sand beach resort known to have clear blue waters, coupled with a serene ambiance. To get here, you’ll have to go on a 45-minute boat ride from the famous Old City of Cartagena.

  2. Rosario Islands - It’s also referred to as Corales Islas del Rosario. The archipelago is located approximately 35 kilometers off the coast of Cartagena and is made up of 28 small coral islands and islets. It’s surrounded by coral reefs and is rich in marine life, perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.

  3. San Andres - It’s a charming island that can be found in the Caribbean Sea and is still technically part of Colombia. There are also tons of amazing beach resorts surrounding the island. A notable one is Lively Spratt Beach. The location features a palm-lined promenade leading to the beachfront.

Eating ice cream by the beach and having long deep talks while taking in the summer sun sounds like a great and fun date! It’s impossible for your girl to not love it.

Take a Trip to Guatapé

Last on our list is this stunning resort town that’s located in Antioquia Colombia. It’s famous for its picturesque lake view, colorful pueblos, and a giant boulder that looks like it’s been stitched with a staircase.

It’s definitely one of those places worthy of being used as a picture postcard.

That being said, you should take your girlfriend on a romantic getaway to this town. While you’re in Guatapé, here are a few things you can do:

  • Climb La Piedra Del Penol - It’s a giant rock that’s become a famous tourist attraction in Colombia.

  • Explore the lake - You can rent a jetski, kayak, or your very own boat.

  • Dinner cruise - If you’re feeling extra, a dinner date on a luxury boat is a great choice. Prices usually start at 20 USD.

  • Scenic helicopter flight - It’s the best way to get an aerial view of the town.
